How the starter triangle works
Like every main-series game, Winds and Waves keeps the Grass, Fire and Water triangle. Browt's Grass moves hit Gecqua super effectively, Gecqua's Water moves hit Pombon, and Pombon's Fire moves hit Browt. Your rival usually picks the starter that beats yours, so whichever you choose, plan a partner that covers that weakness early.
The weakness lists above come from the current type chart (Gen 6 onward). They only apply to the pure-typed first stages. In past generations, many final evolutions gained a second type (for example Decidueye, Incineroar and Primarina in Sun and Moon), which changes their matchups completely. Whether Browt, Pombon or Gecqua do the same is not announced yet.
What the Abilities do
Overgrow, Blaze and Torrent are the classic starter Abilities. Each one boosts moves of the Pokémon's own type by 50% when its HP falls to one third or less. They have worked the same way since Generation 3, so expect the same in Winds and Waves unless Game Freak says otherwise.
Which starter should you pick?
Without evolutions, stats or movesets it is too early for a real tier list, and anyone ranking them today is guessing. A few things you can judge now:
- Pombon is the heaviest and tallest of the three and the only one whose Pokédex entry stresses a friendly temperament.
- Gecqua is described as "very intelligent" and shrewd, which often hints at a technical or special-attacking line, though that is speculation.
- Browt is lively and "a bit clumsy", and Grass starters have historically had the hardest early gyms in many regions.
The safest plan: pick the one you like most, then fill gaps. Our Pokemon team builder shows the shared weaknesses of a six-Pokémon team, so you can practise covering a Grass, Fire or Water lead with Pokémon you already know.
