How to read the Pokemon type chart

Pick the type of the move being used on the left side of the grid, then move across to the type of the Pokémon being hit. The cell tells you the damage multiplier: 2 (super effective), ½ (not very effective), 0 (no effect), or blank for normal damage. Hover or tap a cell to see it spelled out under the chart, or tap a row or column label to fade everything else.

The chart is one-directional. Fire hitting Grass is 2×, but Grass hitting Fire is ½×. To see what a Pokémon is weak to, read down its column instead of across a row; the Pokemon weakness chart does that for you, including dual types.

Patterns worth remembering

  • Normal is the only type that hits nothing super effectively.
  • Fighting, Ground and Fire/Ice/Rock are the classic coverage types: between them they reach most of the chart.
  • Steel resists ten types and ignores Poison entirely, which is why it is the best defensive type.
  • Ghost and Dragon are super effective against themselves, so mirror matches are dangerous for both sides.
  • Fairy shuts down Dragon (immune) and beats Fighting and Dark, but loses to Poison and Steel.

Older type charts

If you are playing Red, Blue or Yellow, the chart was different: there was no Dark, Steel or Fairy, Ghost moves failed against Psychic because of a bug, Bug and Poison were super effective against each other, and Ice took neutral damage from Fire. Generations 2 to 5 added Dark and Steel and had Steel resist Ghost and Dark. Everything on this page follows the modern chart; Bulbapedia's type article documents the history.

From the chart to a team

Knowing matchups is half of it; the other half is covering your team's gaps. Check a single Pokémon with the type calculator, then balance six of them in the Pokemon team builder. If you would rather put types on a football field, the Pokemon All 22 builder rewards type variety with up to +5 team rating.

Type Chart FAQ

How many types are on the Pokemon type chart?

▶

18: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy. That makes 324 attacking-versus-defending matchups.

Which games use this type chart?

▶

The chart shown here was introduced in Pokemon X and Y (Generation 6) when Fairy was added, and it is unchanged in Sun and Moon, Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet.

How do I read the type chart?

▶

Find the attacking move type on the left, then follow the row to the defending Pokemon type along the top. Green 2 is super effective, red ½ is not very effective, black 0 means no effect, and an empty cell is normal 1× damage.

What changed in the Gen 6 type chart?

▶

Fairy was added (strong against Dragon, Fighting and Dark), and Steel lost its resistances to Ghost and Dark. Everything else carried over from Generations 2 to 5.

How many immunities are there?

▶

Eight: Normal and Fighting moves cannot hit Ghost, Ghost cannot hit Normal, Electric cannot hit Ground, Ground cannot hit Flying, Psychic cannot hit Dark, Poison cannot hit Steel, and Dragon cannot hit Fairy.

What about dual-type Pokemon?

▶

Multiply the two values from the chart. A 2× and a 2× make 4×, a 2× and a ½× cancel to 1×, and any 0× makes the move do nothing. Use the Pokemon weakness chart or type calculator to do this automatically.
