What is a Pokémon tower defense game?

Tower defense is a strategy genre: enemies walk along a fixed path in waves, and you stop them by placing defenders beside the path before they reach the end. Classic examples outside Pokémon are Bloons TD, Kingdom Rush and Plants vs. Zombies. A Pokémon tower defense game swaps the towers for Pokémon. Each Pokémon you place attacks enemies in its range, gains levels from the waves it fights, and eventually evolves into something stronger.

That fits Pokémon surprisingly well. Collecting a team, choosing who to train, and planning around types and abilities are already the core of the main series, and tower defense turns them into a puzzle about positioning. Because Nintendo has never released a dedicated Pokémon tower defense game, the genre has been kept alive by fan projects that run in the browser.

PokéPath TD at a glance

PokéPath TD is made by the developer Khydra and is the most popular Pokémon tower defense game in 2026. In the creator's own words, you manage your team and defend different routes against waves of enemies. You level up and evolve your Pokémon to make them stronger and survive increasingly difficult waves. The key design idea is that your Pokémon keep their progress even if you lose, so every defeat brings you one step closer to winning.

The game is updated often. The official site lists patch notes from 1.6.0 in August 2026 through 1.6.3 on September 7, 2026. It is free on the official website pokepath.gg (in the browser) and as a Windows download on itch.io. The game supports eight languages, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, Japanese and Korean.

How to play

  1. Create your profile. Choose your language, an avatar and a starter. Each starter's card explains its effect; Charmander's attacks, for example, burn the target for 10 seconds, removing 0.5% of its life per second.
  2. Place Pokémon on the route. Click a Pokémon in your team panel and place it next to the path. Corners and spots where the path passes twice are the strongest positions, because enemies stay in range longer.
  3. Start the wave. Press Next Wave. The right panel shows the next enemy's stats: health, armor, speed, power, regeneration, whether it can be stunned, slowed, burned or poisoned, whether it is invisible, and how much gold it drops.
  4. Earn, upgrade and evolve. Defeated enemies give gold and experience. Spend it to strengthen your team, and evolve Pokémon when they reach the level.
  5. Unlock more slots. Extra team slots unlock with stars (the locked slots in the first version show 40, 160, 320 and 540 stars), so finishing waves and routes gradually lets you field a bigger team.
  6. Clear every route and beat the Legendaries. You can switch to another path at any time without losing progress on your current route, and the end goal is to complete every path and defeat every Legendary Pokémon.

Controls are simple: mouse or touch to select and place Pokémon and use the menus, and buttons for Auto Mode and wave control. Save Team and Load Team let you store a lineup and bring it back for another route.

Tips and strategy

  • Read the enemy panel before each wave. If the next enemy cannot be slowed or burned, those effects are wasted; armored enemies punish many weak hits, and regenerating enemies need steady damage over time.
  • Bring an answer to invisibility, shields and regeneration. Later routes add these traits so a single brute-force team stops working. Build a balanced lineup instead of six of the same attacker.
  • Stack status effects on the choke point. A slow plus burn or poison on the same stretch of path keeps enemies in range while damage ticks.
  • Don't fear losing. Because levels carry over, a lost run is training. If a route is stuck, play an easier one, level up, and come back.
  • Use the PC box. The developer's own advice is to change strategy and give Pokémon gathering dust in your PC box a chance. Different routes favor different teams.
  • Farm with Auto Mode. Leave an easy route running on Auto to build experience and money while you are away.
  • Back up your save. In the browser, export the save from the settings menu regularly. The desktop version keeps it on your computer.

Other Pokémon tower defense games

Pokémon Tower Defense (PTD) was the original browser hit of the genre: a Flash game by Sam Otero, followed by PTD 2 and PTD 3. You caught Pokémon during levels and used them as towers, and many players remember it from school computers. Adobe ended Flash Player support at the end of 2020, so the original series no longer runs in modern browsers as it once did, and copies on random sites are not maintained by the author.

There are also many fan portals that re-host PokéPath TD next to non-Pokémon tower defense games such as Kingdom Rush, Bloons-style games and GemCraft. Those portals are not run by the developer. The safest places to play are the official site and the creator's itch.io page, linked on this page.

If you like strategy with Pokémon but want something other than tower defense, try our Kanto Tactics guide (a Pokémon auto battler) or PokéBonk (a 3D survivor game). The Pokemon type chart is handy for planning teams.

Is PokéPath TD official?

No. PokéPath TD is a fan-made game by Khydra. It is not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures Inc. or The Pokémon Company. Pokemon All 22 is a separate unofficial fan page and is not connected to the developer; the game is shown here through itch.io's official embed player.

Pokémon Tower Defense FAQ

What is the best Pokémon tower defense game to play right now?

▶

PokéPath TD by Khydra is the most active one in 2026. It runs in the browser, gets regular patches (version 1.6.3 was released on September 7, 2026) and has a Windows download. The older Flash series, Pokémon Tower Defense 1–3, is mostly of historical interest now.

Can I play PokéPath TD on this page?

▶

Yes. The game above is the creator's own itch.io web build, loaded through itch.io's official embed player. The developer notes that the itch.io browser player is no longer the latest version, so for the newest patch play on the official site pokepath.gg or download the game.

Is PokéPath TD free?

▶

Yes, it is free to play in the browser and to download. You can support the creator on itch.io.

Will my progress be saved?

▶

Browser saves live in your browser storage. Clearing browser data, switching browser or switching device loses them, so use Menu → Export in the game settings regularly. Saves only continue in the matching version, so keep playing the same build. The desktop version stores the save on your computer and is the most reliable.

Do I lose my Pokémon if I lose a wave?

▶

No. Pokémon keep their levels and evolutions even when you lose, so a failed run still makes your team stronger for the next attempt.

What does Auto Mode do?

▶

Auto Mode keeps waves running on their own, so you can farm experience and money while you are away from the keyboard.

What happened to the original Pokémon Tower Defense (PTD)?

▶

Pokémon Tower Defense, PTD 2 and PTD 3 were Flash browser games by Sam Otero. Adobe ended Flash Player support at the end of 2020, so modern browsers can no longer run them the way they used to.

Is there an official Pokémon tower defense game?

▶

Not a dedicated one. The well-known Pokémon tower defense games are unofficial fan projects, made without the involvement of Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures Inc. or The Pokémon Company.

Is this site the official PokéPath site?

▶

No. Pokemon All 22 is an unofficial fan page. The official PokéPath TD website is pokepath.gg and the creator's itch.io page is khydra98.itch.io/pokepath.
