What Pokemon Winds and Waves has confirmed so far
Pokémon Winds and Waves were revealed with a first-look trailer during the 30th-anniversary Pokémon Presents. The press release calls them "the newest entries in the Pokémon RPG series" and says they are developed by Game Freak and scheduled for 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. The official site adds that the release will be simultaneous worldwide.
The setting is described as "an open world to explore, with beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves". The site also says the region's Pokémon have "developed their own unique ecosystems", and that you will team up with Pokémon to overcome "the forces of nature that block your path at times". That suggests weather and the sea will matter to the story, but specific mechanics have not been announced.
You play as the main character, and your outfit is different depending on the version. Brazilian Portuguese becomes a selectable language starting with these games.
Pokemon Winds and Waves starters
You choose one of three first partner Pokémon before your journey starts. All three are new:
- Browt, the Bean Chick Pokémon, a Grass type with the Ability Overgrow. It photosynthesizes with the leaves on its brow.
- Pombon, the Puppy Pokémon, a Fire type with Blaze. A heat-generating organ in its lungs makes its throat glow.
- Gecqua, the Water Gecko Pokémon, a Water type with Torrent. It launches springy balls of water from its tail.
Heights, weights, Pokédex text and a type matchup breakdown are on our Winds and Waves starters page. Evolutions and final forms are not announced yet.
Pokemon Winds and Waves release date and platforms
The only confirmed window is 2027. There is no day, month or season yet, no price and no pre-order date from Nintendo. Our Winds and Waves release date page tracks what is official, what retailers list and how past Pokémon release timings compare.
New Pokemon and the Pokédex
Officially, five new designs have been shown: the three starters plus two Pikachu with a new look, Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. The size of the regional Pokédex, the legendary Pokémon and any new battle mechanic are not announced yet. See the new Pokémon and Pokédex page.
The region: islands and ocean
The region's name has not been announced. The trailer shows tropical islands, villages and an underwater scene. IGN and many fans point to inspiration from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia; that is a reading of the trailer, not an official statement.
Leaks and rumours
Since the reveal, leakers have posted claims about around 300 new Pokémon, a region of about 100 islands and new forms. None of that is confirmed. We keep those claims on a separate leaks vs confirmed page so this hub stays facts only.
Get ready: plan a balanced team
The starter trio is the classic Grass, Fire and Water triangle, so you already know the matchups. Use the type calculator to see each starter's weaknesses, then try the Pokemon team builder to practise building a six-Pokémon team that covers them. Every past game rewards the same habit: pick partners that cover your starter's weak spots.
