How to use the Pokemon weakness calculator
- Pick a type. Tap any of the 18 type buttons. Fire is selected to start.
- Add a second type for dual-type Pokemon, such as Water + Ground for Swampert or Quagsire. Picking a third replaces the oldest, and tapping a selected type removes it.
- Read the result. Weaknesses are grouped into 4× and 2×, resistances into ½× and ¼×, and immunities into 0×. Open "All 18 multipliers" for the full row.
- Share it. The page URL updates (for example ?types=water, ground), so you can bookmark or send any matchup.
How the Pokemon type calculator works out effectiveness
Every move has one type and every Pokemon has one or two. When a move hits, the game looks up the attacking type against each defending type and multiplies the results. A super-effective hit does 2×, a resisted hit ½×, and an immune target takes 0×. Same-type attack bonus (STAB) adds a separate 1.5× when the attacker shares the move's type, but that is about the attacker, not the defender, so it isn't shown here.
Dual types: where 4× and ¼× come from
With two types, both multipliers apply. Rock vs Fire/Flying Charizard is 2 × 2 = 4×. Fire vs Water/Dragon Kingdra is ½ × ½ = ¼×. Electric vs Water/Ground is 2 × 0 = 0×, because an immunity always wins. This is why dual-type weakness math is easy to get wrong in your head and why a calculator helps.
The Gen 6+ type chart in brief
The calculator uses the current chart (see the Bulbapedia type article for the full history) introduced in Pokemon X and Y and unchanged through Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet. Key facts worth memorising:
- Immunities: Normal and Fighting can't touch Ghost; Ghost can't touch Normal; Electric can't hit Ground; Ground can't hit Flying; Psychic can't hit Dark; Poison can't hit Steel; Dragon can't hit Fairy.
- Fairy beats Dragon, Fighting and Dark, and is weak to Poison and Steel.
- Steel resists ten types and is immune to Poison, making it the best defensive type.
- Ghost and Dark are only resisted by a handful of types, so they make reliable attacking types.
- Ice hits Dragon, Flying, Grass and Ground hard but resists only itself.
If you play the original Red, Blue or Yellow, note those games used an older chart with no Dark, Steel or Fairy, a Ghost-vs-Psychic bug and different Bug/Poison interactions. Gen 2 to 5 had Dark and Steel but no Fairy, and Steel also resisted Ghost and Dark.
Using weaknesses to build a team
A type calculator tells you about one Pokemon; a team needs partners that cover each other. When you find a weakness here, look for a teammate that resists or is immune to that type. Our Pokemon team builder does that across six Pokemon at once and highlights weaknesses your whole team shares. Our type strategy guide goes deeper, and you can put the knowledge to work against Red's team in Daily Red.
Pokemon type quiz: test yourself
Knowing the chart by heart makes battles faster. The quiz below gives you a random attacking type and a single or dual defender. Choose 0×, ¼×, ½×, 1×, 2× or 4×. Dual types are where most people slip, so expect a few surprises. Try to get ten in a row.
