How Pokemon All 22 Ratings Are Calculated
Every number you see on Pokemon All 22, from a single card’s rating to your team OVR and season record, comes from a small set of rules. We publish them so you can check our work, argue with it, and use it to build better teams.
Ingredients
Each Gen 1 Pokémon has six base stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed), a height and a weight. The stats are the familiar series base stats sourced from the community PokeAPI project.
We also compute a size score. It grows with the logarithm of weight (so heavy Pokémon matter, but with diminishing returns) plus height, and it is capped at 150 so giants like Onix don’t break the scale.
Position weights
Each position multiplies stats by its own weights. The weights always add up to 1.
| Position | Weights |
|---|---|
| QB | 45% Sp. Atk, 30% Sp. Def, 25% Speed |
| RB | 50% Speed, 35% Attack, 15% HP |
| FB | 40% Attack, 30% HP, 30% Size |
| WR | 70% Speed, 15% Sp. Atk, 15% Attack |
| TE | 35% Attack, 30% Defense, 20% Speed, 15% Size |
| OL (LT, LG, C, RG, RT) | 45% Defense, 25% HP, 30% Size |
| DL (LE, DT, RE) | 40% Attack, 20% Defense, 40% Size |
| LB (OLB, MLB) | 40% Attack, 30% Speed, 30% Defense |
| CB | 60% Speed, 25% Sp. Def, 15% Attack |
| S (FS, SS) | 40% Speed, 35% Sp. Def, 25% Attack |
From weighted stats to a rating
The weighted sum is converted with rating = 40 + weighted sum × 0.42, rounded, and capped at 99. The +40 floor means even the weakest Pokémon rate in the 50s, which keeps the scale readable, and the 0.42 multiplier spreads the field so elite fits land in the 90s.
Worked examples
Pikachu is fast but small and frail. It rates 73 at receiver and 71 at cornerback, its best spots, but only 61 at left tackle. A fun pick, but not a starter on a contender.
Snorlax has huge HP and enormous weight. It rates 98 at fullback, the best on the board, and 89 on the defensive line, but just 60 at receiver.
Onix is the opposite of Pikachu: very long, very heavy, high Defense, low special stats. It’s a 93 left tackle and an 86 defensive end, but a 59 quarterback.
Dragonite is the ultimate utility player. It rates 96 at defensive end, 88 at tight end, 85 at linebacker and 82 at safety. Few Pokémon are above 80 at so many spots.
Team ratings
- Offense is the average rating of your filled offensive spots; Defense is the same for defense.
- Type-variety bonus is +1 per three distinct types on your roster, up to +5.
- Team OVR = average of offense and defense, plus the bonus.
Season simulation
For each of 17 games, an opponent rating between 62 and 87 is drawn. Each side’s score is (rating − 45) × 0.9 plus a random amount from 0 to 21. Higher score wins; ties are a coin flip. In the free builder each simulation is random. In the challenges the randomness is seeded by your run, so the record is fixed and can be verified by our leaderboard server.
Why these numbers?
We wanted a formula that is simple enough to explain in one page, produces believable football archetypes, and rewards knowing your Pokédex. It is a fan formula, not official, and we may tune it as the community gives feedback. If we change it, we’ll note it here.
